about

A Break in the Battle is a collaborative effort from three Dallas, Texas songwriters and multi-instrumentalists, Salim Nourallah, Chris Holt, and Paul Averitt. Conceived in 2014, but actualized in 2016, the project came to life as a result of Salim’s desire to pay homage to some of his favorite songwriters and songs. Known predominantly as a producer and for his catalog of solo work, Nourallah came to the realization that launched Battle after releasing his 6th record, Skeleton Closet. He’d finally come to a point as an artist where it felt right to pay respect to the songs and songwriters who’d influenced him.

This is a tribute album in the truest sense; three long-time friends bringing old memories out into the light of day with the hope of inspiring a new generation of listeners. Careful attention was paid to the raw emotions of each song. These covers have been reimagined with the intent of stripping the original versions bare and illuminating what remains. The title of the album, A Break in the Battle, came from a lyric in the Pretenders’ “Back On the Chain Gang”: “I found a picture of you/Those were the happiest days of my life/Like a break in the battle was your part/In the wretched life of a lonely heart.” “A break in the battle” is a fitting description of the lifelong relationship Salim, Chris, and Paul have had with music — music being the safe haven, a temporary break from the ongoing struggles of life.

All three multi-talented musicians are now mainstays of the Dallas music scene, and their histories have been intertwined since the late 90’s. They’ve started bands together, played on each other’s albums, and been involved in many of the same collaborative efforts. A Break in the Battle is a culmination of nearly two decades of mutual admiration and friendship. This album is not only a labor of love though. It showcases 15 undeniably brilliant songs and also the musical mastery of this trio.

SALIM NOURALLAH
Salim Nourallah credits discovering the Beatles’ White Album, at age 9, with changing his life. By 16 he began teaching himself guitar because the songs swimming around in his head needed a medium to get out into the world. Salim is now recognized internationally as an accomplished songwriter and producer. Frequently acknowledged by the Dallas Observer Music Awards, he won BEST PRODUCER for seven consecutive years. Of late, he’s produced four Old 97’s records, The Damnwells, and written a stack of songs with Emily Robison & Martie Maguire from the Dixie Chicks.

CHRIS HOLT
Chris Holt has a reputation for being able to play almost any style of music on any given instrument. He’s kept very busy over the past 15 years gigging around Dallas: performing as a solo artist, collaborating with friends, and playing with Holt and Stockslager (a Simon & Garfunkel tribute act). He spent a chunk of 2015 touring with Don Henley, playing banjo and rhythm guitar in Henley’s backing band. Holt recently released a 22-song collection called Stargazer, which features a guest spot from Don Henley himself. Salim also produced Holt’s solo record, A Cosmic Joke, in 2010.

PAUL AVERITT
Paul Averitt wrote his first song at age 4; by age 7 he played both the violin and guitar; and by age 12 he had received 3 ½ years of classical vocal training as soloist for the highly acclaimed Texas Boys Choir. Over the years Paul has been a member of many favorite local bands including the Happiness Factor, in which Salim & Paul played together between 2000 and 2003. His current band is called REVOLUTION 9 and he and Chris both regularly perform with A Hard Day’s Night, a very popular North Texas Beatles tribute band.
